Scrap quilt finish and To-Do Tuesday #37

My version of Kawandi quilt is finished!  I am calling it Birds in the Moonlight.

I have blogged about it in the past several weeks after I was inspired by Sujata Shah on TQS #2705.  I love the improv way of deciding as you go what comes next.  I used #12 Aurifil purple thread to meander my way around and around!!  It is 13 x 17....a small wall hanging.

My 37th week of linking to Home Sewn By Us for To-Do Tuesday

Here is the list from last week

To-Do Tuesday week of September 22 through September 28:
  1. Get at least half of the Cool Cat pieces cut out ✅
  2. figure out where I was on the Apple Crisp quilt and finish cutting and start sewing ✅
  3. decide on a fall project to make ✅
16 of 30 cut out....still need to find lighter blues.  The photo of the blue fabric I showed last week is all so similar SO  I ordered Peacock fabric Kaffe Fassett and I would like to use some of that in this quilt.

Apple Crisp all cut out and HST sewn using the paper...now to sew the blocks together

This fall fabric is offset and I decided to cut it apart and add some black leftover strips and added a back and some batting and I will use it to practice FMQing.

To-Do Tuesday week of September 29 through October 5:
  1. FMQ     Angela Walters has a new class on YouTube about using rulers
  2. Apple Crisp blocks
  3. start another Kawandi quilt

Slow Sunday Stitching

Oh...the joy of hand stitching.  I am so glad to have such a fun project to do.  My Kawandi quilt is almost done.  The last pieces are pinned in place and I am stitching around and around!  I explained about this in this blog post  http://carylquilts.blogspot.com/2020/09/slow-sunday-stitching_20.html

Here is the photo today

I am probably putting my rows closer together than necessary but I like it.  My stitches are wavy and not even....but I like it.  There is something about this that is fun for me to choose fabrics as I stitch and not plan too far ahead.  AND then just live with the decisions as being good!

To-Do Tuesday #36 and mini quilt finish

My 36th week of linking to Home Sewn By Us for To-Do Tuesday

Here is the list from last week

To-Do Tuesday week of September 15 through September 21:
  1. finish hand quilting mini three crazy sisters quilt ✅
  2. start Cool Cats quilt in blues ✅
  3. FMQ 4 days this week ✅
1.   I have blogged about this before in previous posts.  The pattern is by Joe Cunningham on Craftsy.  I wanted to make a small version of the quilt in the class and needed a little quilt on the wall in a space next to my Beatrix Potter collection.  I started this collection of figurines 45 years ago!!  A friend and I enjoyed collecting the little books and then after we had all of them we started collecting figurines.  My favorite character is Hunca Munca.
I hand quilted using Aurifil #12 purple thread.
Photos of my Beatrix Potter mini three crazy sisters quilt.

2.   I gathered as many blues that I have collected to use for a blue Cool Cats quilt to make for a friend.  I started cutting out some of the pieces.  But I need to find more lights to go with these fabrics.

Did anyone do a jelly roll quilt on Saturday....Jelly Roll Day?  I started sewing some strips together but not definite on a pattern yet.  The roll I used was Handmade by Bonnie and Camille which I purchases on sale several years ago....with no definite plan!  I have made several of the shortcut quilts from tutorials (Jelly Roll Jam I and Jelly Roll Jam II and Slice) from the fatquartershop online.  There isn't a lot of contrast with the strips in this jelly roll.

And this past week we celebrated our 59th wedding anniversary!!  It doesn't seem possible that many years have gone by.....soooo fast!

To-Do Tuesday week of September 22 through September 28:
  1. Get at least half of the Cool Cat pieces cut out
  2. figure out where I was on the Apple Crisp quilt and finish cutting and start sewing
  3. decide on a fall project to make

Slow Sunday Stitching

Last Sunday I blogged about the project I started using scraps of fabric.  It is a very different way to make a quilt.  I have researched this Kawandi type of quilt and there are photos but not a lot of direction on how to make them.  As I explained you hand stitch the scraps of fabric starting on the outside.  I am figuring it out as I go.  Some of my stitches are running stitch and some are back stitch and some are short and some are longer.  That is the way I want it....and I am enjoying this process and it is so much fun!!!

To-Do Tuesday #35 and dolphin runner finish

My 35th week of linking to Home Sewn By Us for To-Do Tuesday

Here is the list from last week

To-Do Tuesday week of September 8 through September 14:
  1. Finish dolphin runner yes
  2. Work on other projects in progress..........scrappy rectangles.....around the cabin....and mini 3 crazy sisters AND my potholder FMQ practice pieces. yes

This dolphin runner started with me finding 3 dolphin fat quarters with the idea of making a runner for a friend to fit the top of her 50 x 18 cabinet.  She also really likes dolphins, blue and flags.  The decisions on this were the size of each section and the sashing...the cornerstones were needed to make it complete.  Then I decided on quilting with wavy lines with some crossing over each other.
And I remembered to FMQ my name and year at the edge...you can see it if you zoom in on that area.
The next photo is the scrappy rectangle quilt top finished and ready to find a backing and decide on quilting?  I used a black jelly roll to put vertical sashing on each block and used all of the length of the strips for the horizontal sashing.  I left the selvage ends on to sew the strips and will trim them after quilting.

I started a new project this week....actually two new projects........
I was watching The Quilt Show episode 2705 and became fascinated with the Kawandi quilt method shown by Sujata Shah.  I put photos and explained this in my last post on Sunday...Slow Sunday Stitching.
I also started another little quilt because of another fascination I saw on Pinterest....by Melody Johnson.  Nothing more about that now.

To-Do Tuesday week of September 15 through September 21:
  1. finish hand quilting mini three crazy sisters quilt
  2. start Cool Cats quilt in blues
  3. FMQ 4 days this week

Slow Sunday Stitching

Today I am stitching on a new type of quilt that I started this week.  I was watching The Quilt Show episode 2705 and Sujata Shah was showing the Kawandi scrap quilt method.  It is so different than anything I have seen before and I had to start my version.  Here is what I have done so far........

You start by hand stitching pieces from the outside and go all around.  I am deciding the next patchwork piece as I come to each.  So far.....this is so fun!

The start is using a very thin piece of cotton fabric and folding it over a piece of batting and baste stitch around the edge.

I am not putting the corner pieces on as the true Kawandi quilts are done.  Research this if you aren't familiar.....besides TQS (which might be free if you aren't a member?) there are videos on You Tube.

Sujata Shah has a web site called The Root Connection.

To-Do Tuesday #34

My 34th week of linking to Home Sewn By Us for To-Do Tuesday

Here is the list from last week

To-Do Tuesday week of September 1 through September 7:
  1. Continue hand quilting the mini Beatrix Potter quilt 3 crazy sisters yes
  2. Scrappy rectangle sashing yes
  3. FMQ practice 4 days yes
  4. Scrappy around the cabin blocks....join more together yes
I talked about three projects in my blog post 2 days ago with photos...
the Beatrix Potter mini, the dolphin runner and #20 Stitch Meditation.

I did some FMQ with my BSR and used designs I saw on Craftsy and IG by Christina Cameli. I made a practice sandwich using 4 images from Susan Winget fabric.
Sprials.......echoed paisley...pebbles.....S shaped echoed....she calls toothpaste swirl.....bear claws and my S or L shape echoed.

AND here are some other smaller practice pieces where I followed the lines of the design and used the BSR foot and also the ruler foot with a straight ruler to do the lines. The ruler foot works much better........I just need to get used to moving everything at once.....hold the ruler in place....move the fabric....and keep the ruler foot next to the ruler AND get a consistent stitch.

Another photo of the around the cabin blocks on a batting in front of another quilt. I made little cardboard pieces in different sizes to help with checking all the sizes of the blocks....so I don't have to keep measuring each block piece. They are laying on top of each group in the photo....5½" 6" 6½"....etc....

To-Do Tuesday week of September 8 through September 14:
  1. Finish dolphin runner
  2. Work on other projects in progress..........scrappy rectangles.....around the cabin....and mini 3 crazy sisters AND my potholder FMQ practice pieces.

Slow Sunday Stitching

AND today I am hand stitching on THREE different projects..........

I am happily hand quilting my Beatrix Potter mini 3 Crazy Sisters quilt that I have mentioned before. This is from one of Joe Cunningham's classes on Craftsy.

I am hand quilting with the same quilting as Joe used by machine.  I am thinking I might need to do some machine quilting in the ditch along the block edges.....not sure if that would take away from the total design.  I don't want it to look blocky....more an overall design??

And I am also working on the binding on the dolphin runner and it is almost done..........

I just finished Stitch Meditation #20

I am hand quilting the mini quilt....blogged about it last blog post.  I started using a different thread and because of the difficulties I was having I changed to Aurifil #12

Stitch Meditation #19
These fabric pieces were on my cutting table and begging to be a Stitch Meditation! And it has been three months since I did my last one!! Love just letting it lead me to stitch with no plan!!

Here is a photo of the two potholders I finished........I used these as FMQ practice and have blogged about them previously. I used a decorative stitch on the Daisy potholder to use the back as a binding.....last week I had it ready to stitch and my machine was not working right. BUT all of a sudden after it was in "time out" for several days it decided to work....hee hee

To-Do Tuesday week of September 1 through September 7:
