mug rug finishes and another Gypsy Wife block

I finished this mug rug a week ago on Valentine's Day.  It is the one I discussed in my previous blog post.  I called it hugs and kisses mug rug.  I used several stamps for the images and colored with Inktense pencils and fabric medium.  The center heart was stamped with Fabrico garnet fabric ink pad.  The left two were stamped with Versa Craft black ink pad.  The bottom right was stamped with Versa color violet.
Such fun....I want to do more projects with images on fabric and coloring!
Photo is the back of the mug rug...Susan Winget old fabric....I still love it!!

I had some scraps left from previous projects and made a patchwork mug rug.  I quilted the top and batting together and then added 1¼" strips first to the sides and then the top and bottom.
I like this easy kind of finish by putting the back and front together and stitch, turn and then topstitch around the edge.  I used a 4.0 stitch around the top edge.
A plate of yummy chocolate Kodiak donuts on a clear glass plate on top of an older placemat I made several years ago.  The recipe for these is in my other blog
https://recipesbycaryl.blogspot.com/2018/12/kodiak-chocolate-donuts.html
Here is another block for the Gypsy Wife quilt.  I got in a hurry and didn't trim one of the HST's properly and I thought I could make it work when I sewed the pieces together...I may do it over.
And here is a photo of what I received in the Sew Sampler box today.  Fun stuff!!

scrappy strips, Gypsy Wife and mug rug

Projects I am working on this past week.  I did 3 more blocks for the scrappy strips around the cabin and I might make these blocks a little larger.  I am making different size blocks and I will see how it all fits.  Just....deciding as I go.  That is the fun way to make blocks.............
Another block for the Gypsy Wife quilt along....square in a square.
Hugs and kisses mug rug in progress.  I did some stamping and then added pieces of fabric.  I started coloring the hearts with an Inktense pencil.  AND I want to add glitter.  I added some fabric medium to stickles on a fabric sample and that is what I will add to this.  I should have done the finishing on the stamped areas first BEFORE I added the rest of the pieces....but I was in a hurry to see how it looked.  Now I am practicing on scrap pieces of fabric so I don't ruin this piece!

Creative Bliss!!

Fun day of creating from one thing to the next!  My favorite walking foot quilting.  In the photo I am quilting a mug rug.
I put a wad of old rubber bands together and dipped in acrylic paint and pounce on a piece of old folder and then in my creative journal for a background.  Yesterday I did the deep lilac and let it dry and today true red using same wad of rubber bands.
Polka dots and little lines with pearlescent paint in my Midori for a background.
Photo shows making patchwork paper to use in my journals.
This photo is from what I did several days ago....trying to make a corner block for the mug rug.  I need more practice in machine quilting...(it didn't look as good as the one I did last year).   I turned it into a sample to practice different techniques. I used Dye-na-Flow ink from the bottle with a dot on first then I used a liner brush.  I tried an Inktense pencil with aloe gel and with fabric medium.  The one I like best is with a Copic marker.

And last is a photo from our walk this past week at Lake Miramar.  I like the way the sun was shining on the water and making it sparkle!

mug rug with stamped and stitched flower tutorial

I used Sunkissed jelly roll for the squares...
The top right is Kona Cotton PFD Bleach fabric.
I used Hero Arts stamps CL375.  I stamped the images with Versa Color petal pink and split pea.
Then I stitched the stamped image with a layer of batting underneath.
I used Wink of Stella to outline the lines in the flower image.
And Copic RV02 on the flower and Copic YG03on the leaf.
I used Copic Y21 for the center of the flower and the background.
Photo of some practice pieces which is so helpful to figure out what works and what doesn't.
I researched online what works on fabric and surprised about some of these that I used.
I have some fabric markers but not in the right colors for this project.
Cute backing fabric shows the quilting too.  The thread I used was Superior Perfect Quilter variegated 085 Sunrays wt 17 on the top and bottom line in the bobbin.

Blue with stitched flower mug rug

Here is a little tutorial of how I did this mug rug/small placemat...
I used 2½" squares and the right upper corner is 4½"...
I used a larger piece of blue than 4½" and stamped a Hero Arts stamp CG134....
I used a fabric ink pad but I needed to see the lines better for stitching.....soooo....
I copied the stamp on vellum and taped the fabric on top and used a light under to see and
traced with a Frixion pen.  These pens are great...easy to write on fabric and the ink is erasable.
I used a walking foot and the thread is varigated rainbow 838.  I used a shorter stitch (Bernina 1.5 to 1.8) following along the flower lines.  I did the flower first with the batting and then cut the square to 4½" and added to the rest of the blocks.  I then put a layer of batting under the whole thing (this corner has a double layer).  I trimmed some of the batting in the seam areas around the top corner.
I also trim my batting and backing AFTER I add the binding.
Here is the back using the wonder clips to hold while I hand tacked the binding.
I loved doing this project and this tute will help me if I want to make another one!!
so now.....let me know if you make one of these!

Pink & Zebra Mug Rug with a Stamped Flower

I really like little mug rugs but I haven't made one in a long time until this week....
I used some scraps from a quilt I made and a flower (CL375) I had stamped on fabric and stitched with batting behind it...
I started with the left top side and the bottom right first...
I liked the larger zebra stripe under the flower and decided to balance it with a square on the bottom left corner......
I did a small #4 stitch around the flower outside and around the inside circle...
To put this together I layed down the back fabric wrong side up...
then I used fleece and then the mug rug top....
I brought the backing fabric to the front for a self binding and used #332 stitch....
I had used that stitch in a mug rug Dec 2010 and it worked for that one...
But for this one I think it would have looked better if I had chosen a stitch that stayed on top of the binding....
I used Smooch sassy pink for the flower but it is not waterproof....
Soooo next time I make one I will probably use paintstix after stitching the design....

There are a lot of mug rugs on the internet on pinterest, flickr, etc....
I just joined a group on flickr called Scrappy Mug Rug Gallery...
they have 859 members and over 5,000 photos...
Be sure and check it out for a LOT of inspiration!

I finally have a finish to link to finish it Friday and Link a Finish Friday...

some projects today and one with stamped fabric

I haven't been able to do anything creative since the weekend...
I usually do something creative every day......
Sooooo today I wanted to do some sewing...
I decided to make a mug rug and started cutting and sewing fabric...
not finished yet....photos are pieces layed out.....
I stitched a flower I had stamped on fabric...it is Hero Arts CL375...
I used a sharpie marker for the black parts and I am using Smooch sassy pink on the petals.....
ALSO.....today I was cutting some squares for making a Traffic Jam quilt....
Pat Sloan has a free pattern on her blog and I have been wanting to make it...
I will use gray for the 4.5" squares and the 2.5" squares will be scrappy....
For some of the blocks I will use Pat's Nikki fabrics that I purchased many years ago...
I am going to stop saving my fabrics and USE them.....

Life is short....get busy and do the things now you have been planning for someday....
That is just what I am doing....
